Come, come, let me tell you my story. A long, long time ago...

Susan Hsiu-fang Liu was born and raised in Taiwan, and came to the United States in 1974 to study social work. She started painting at the age of forty when she was in search of paintings for decorating her house. She couldn't find anything she liked in her price range, so she decided to create her own. By studying books, taking art classes and workshops, and frequenting art galleries, she realized a new talent. She was a social worker, a computer programmer/analyst, a mother of two children, and currently, a full-time painter.

Red Eye Cicada at Brookfield Zoo
Acrylic
11”W X 14”H
When the artist drew this cicada, she noticed that one antenna was shorter than the other one.
Was it born in this way? Was it attacked by a predator?
She decided to keep this feature, because this is nature.
This piece has a bold style and color to portray a wild feeling of nature.
A Newly Molted Red Eye Cicada
Acrylic
11”W X 14”H
The nymph had waited for 17 years underground and came out to transform into its adult form.
This stage of life is beautiful but fragile.
In this piece, the cicada looks afloat and pops.
The semi-transparent ivory color made it like a little star in the sky.
Eastern-screech Owl in a Heart-shaped Cavity
Acrylic
8”W x 8”H
Fall in love with this little fuzzy ball with a smiley sleeping face?
He/she even sleeps in a heart-shaped home!
It's nature's hidden picture of hearts.
How many hearts can you spot in this painting? The artist counted at least 10!

Fiona Chiang was born in 2016 in Minnesota. Both her parents are from Taiwan. She loves reading and drawing. Summer in 2024, one of her summer camps was canceled. Her mother suggested that they can have a “drawing camp” at home instead. Seeing mom drawing cicadas inspired her to draw a cicada, too. She came up with the idea of this incredible artwork.
CeCe on the Branch
Colored pencil and watercolor
9”W x 12”H
In this painting, Fiona was looking at the cicada in a glass jar with excitement.
She caught this cicada and named her CeCe. She wanted to keep it as a “pet”, but eventually released it to nature.

Felix Cheng was born on April 20th, 1992 in Kansas. He moved to Minnesota when he was 5, and procured cable television at the age of 7. Enthralled by the plethora of animation available, he began to diligently doodle the well-loved and memorable characters he is fond of.
Fast-forward to High School, Felix began taking art classes under the supervision of Todd Clercx. During these budding years, Felix was introduced to the world of acrylic paint and graphic design. During his senior year, his self-portrait was selected as a part of an exhibition at the Har Mar Mall.
After graduation, Felix went to the North St. Paul Next Step Transition Program and had continued developing his skills in acrylic painting, as well as exploring the new medium of oil painting. He had also forayed into the world of Flash animation. He had produced over 50 paintings, and also produced “Aldrid Von Pectos the Strong Man,” a Flash animation. The animation was produced from March 28th 2011 to November 10th, 2013 back when he took a Design and Interactive Media class at Northeast Metro 916, which is currently located at the Century College East Campus.
Felix took classes at Century College after graduating from Next Step, which lasted for three years. He majored in 3D animation and got his diploma after two years at Century and is currently working on Heather’s Under the Weather in 3Ds Max. Felix also took Web Design at Century in which he received his second diploma and is currently a freelance graphic designer.

A cold wave has arrived on the streets of Taiwan, and the chill has swept over every bit of my body. My feet were sore, my body was tired, as were my eyes, and my heart was exhausted.
Then, I saw a mutton oven stall on the roadside.
The heat emanated like passion, and the fragrance captured me, where I found myself without objection!
Like seeing an oasis in the desert, travelers gather quickly to occupy every spot of the noodle stall.
Red plastic chairs give their support to every weak body. Noodles filled with mutton soup are greedily consumed, and fill the stomachs of the hungry.
Every pore on the face gladly receives the soothing warmth of the hot air!
Each finds their happy moment, silently lowering one's head, welcoming relief from hunger and the cold.
Eternal Love
Cardstock Paper, Ballpoint Pen, Alcohol Markers
13"W X 19"H
Eternal Love is a work that explores my personal understanding of what it means to be a part of Christ's body. I would like to express the heart of Christ by painting a picture of living by the Spirit (following Jesus) through the more mundane parts of life.
Each character (or pair) represents a way Christ can lead in a Christian’s life–whether it is being patient in traffic, or repeatedly laying down one’s past at the foot of the cross. There are many more examples than what has been expressed here.
The braided rope that hangs above the cross is meant to represent the relationship we can now have towards God the Father through the cross. Through Jesus’ sacrificial death and victory over death on the cross, we have access to God. And by grace, we can have life (signified by the white/light border) beyond the darkness that surrounds all who live in this fallen world.
I pray that Christ’s love can be discovered by you today and received by all.
“but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” - Romans 5:8 ESV
Blessings,
Sean Tsai

Still remember when I was young, I used to run to the nearby tangerine shop, exchanging the PET bottles I collected for money. Then eagerly taking the change from the boss's hand to buy candies and cookies displayed on the shelves. There were so many options, I always hesitated before making up my mind each time. The crispy noodles of the Little Prince brand were placed in the upper right corner of the shelf in my memory, their salty taste paired with bagged cola could make me happy for a long time. Eating with friends from the neighborhood, thinking about where to adventure next, really made me so happy!
