How do we define creativity?

A creative person enjoys life.
Being creative is turning invisible ideas into visible works.
Being creative is also able to solve problems.
We present this summer camp to develop your right brain for artistic expression and your left brain for critical thinking. Together, to be

Creative!

Sam belives that knowing how to communicate with technology is a must-have skill in the digital world today.
Therefore, he encourages highschoolers to take time to explore using technology for carrying out various ideas from various subject matters.
In this summer camp, he will introduce the basic but important concepts in computer programming through making computer games and teach basic coding to communicate with the computer through using Scratch, a program designed by MIT.

Besides working in the computer industry, Sam has been using computer programming to create his own online library for communities to check out books.
He also designs interactive games for learning Chinese, as well as teaching people to write simple codes to solve mathematical problems or analyze statistics.

The way of instruction:

The instructors together will give around 30 minutes of online teaching through google meet.
Then, the students have around 30 minutes to practice along with Q&A each day.
After the class, the students are welcome to make their own projects and email the teachers for their questions and/or discuss with peers online.

The story behind the theme

Summer break is a time for resting from school academic work; but also an opportunity for trying something new and developing your potential at a slower pace.

According to the Linkedin company, the top one soft skill companies need most in 2020 is creativity.
And two of the top 10 hard skills are scientific computing and video production.
Therefore, to prepare our highschoolers for entering the real world, we design this summer camp for developing the students’ creativity through learning computer programming and making animation.

The purpose of this summer camp is to give the students an opportunity to test drive their interests in the animation and computer programming industry.
The content will cover basic concepts with real-time practice.
Meanwhile, with the instructors’ mentorship, the students play a central role to be an active learner and problem solver, not just an information receiver.
The deeper the students probe into what they want to know, the more possibilities they will explore.
We hope this summer camp help students develop the life-long skills of self-learning and creative problem solving.

From the director of Educational Program

I started this camp in year 2013 thinking about the need of my own children.
As an educator and parent, I want to send my kids to the camps with loving instructors, creative curricula, and safe learning environment.

As an immigrant from Taiwan, I also hope to pass down the Chinese heritage through sharing Chinese culture to the next generation from the world.

I believe that the summer break is an opportunity outside of the regular school time to inspire students to explore variety of interests.

The purpose is not to master certain skills within short time; but to expose the students to new ideas or opportunities, hopefully as a base for the further learning in the future.

About the director

The educational program director, Manling Chen, coordinates the team from Taiwan Online Library to creatively design this summer camp.

We hope to inspire young generation to become citizens of the world through being exposed to the Eastern culture and learning new things from different peoples.
