Wing Young Huie

Mr. Huie is the selected photographic artist for 2018 McKnight Distinguished Artist Award.
After graduating from University of Minnesota with a journalism degree, Mr Huie planned to work as a journalist.
However, after taking one-week lesson with Garry Winogrand, the renowned American street photographer, Mr Huie loved it and started to teach himself street photography.
He worked as a bartender plus freelance photojournalist and commercial photographer for several years for a living.
Meanwhile, he applied for grants to create photography projects he was passionate about. These projects include:
• Frogtown: This project recorded the diverse daily lives of people in the oldest town in St. Paul from 1993 to 1995.
• Lake Street USA: This project recorded the spots from the poor to the rich areas on the six-mile long Lake street from 1997 to 2000.
• University Ave: This project recorded the community life on the University Ave in St. Paul from 2007 to 2010.

Mr Huie recently published his third book, Chinese-ness, in which he interviewed and took photos for people all over USA and China. In this book, he shared his memoir of childhood and journey of seeking self-image and identity.
With a passion for helping young people to pursue their life-meaning, Mr Huie has been creating several photographic projects to dialogue with people about exploring who they are and what they want to be.

The story behind the theme

Last year, I got an opportunity to interview Wing Young Huie for the national Chinese newspaper, World Journal.
After reading his book “Chinese-ness”, I was greatly touched by Mr Huie’s honest exploration about human identity through his artistic expression of photography.

Mr Huie also has been sharing his journey through photography projects with many young people to engage them in life-meaning questions about themselves and others.
It’s an honor that Mr Huie is willing to lend his lens of observation and understanding about peoples and to bring impact on our community and next generation.

From the director of Educational Program

I started this camp in year 2013 thinking about the need of my own children.
As an educator and parent, I want to send my kids to the camps with loving instructors, creative curricula, and safe learning environment.

As an immigrant from Taiwan, I also hope to pass down the Chinese heritage through sharing Chinese culture to the next generation from the world.

I believe that the summer break is an opportunity outside of the regular school time to inspire students to explore variety of interests.

The purpose is not to master certain skills within short time; but to expose the students to new ideas or opportunities, hopefully as a base for the further learning in the future.

About the director

The educational program director, Manling Chen, coordinates the team from Taiwan Online Library to creatively design this summer camp.

We hope to inspire young generation to become citizens of the world through being exposed to the Eastern culture and learning new things from different peoples.

Taiwan Online Library is a non-profit organization founded in 2009.
Our mission is to promote cultural diversity and build up the communities.
For benefiting the American communities, our summer camp always welcomes all ethnicity of students.
